BASIC CONTRACTS 101

A Basic Music Management contract, sans any provisionary clauses (of which an image contract would be one)
A slightly more detailed Music Management Contract (also sans any provisionary clauses, such as an image clause - which are quite standard when someone is being marketed to a target demographic)
Pertinent information (any emphasis mine):
Artist engages Manager to be the exclusive personal manager, representative and advisor, throughout the world, of Artist (and any company or corporation formed, owned or controlled, directly or indirectly, by Artist) in all facets of Artist’s careers in the field of entertainment. Without limiting the foregoing, Manager will be Artist’s exclusive representative for negotiating the terms governing the disposition, use, employment, promotion, and exploitation of Artist’s talent as performing artist, recording artist, songwriter, composer, producer, actor, writer, director, packager or otherwise.
The manager controls EVERY aspect of the artist’s career.
Artist gives to Manager as Artist’s attorney-in-fact, full power and authority to do and perform all and every act and thing necessary to be done for the purposes set forth in this Paragraph 5 as fully as Artist might or could do if personally present and ratifies and confirms all that Manager shall lawfully do or cause to be done by virtue of the grant of such power.
full power and authority - Let that sink in. They can make any and all decisions for the artist, and can do so without notifying the artist first.

The job of an artist manager can vary depending upon the contract agreed. There’s lots of variation involved as management these days tend to have a broader skill base to accompany digital marketing and online promotion as well as branding and traditional marketing etc. Artist management usually offer a full catalogue of services which are then packaged up to suit a certain artist or band’s needs.

You do realize that One Direction signed with Modest right? Modest didn’t sign with One Direction? You seem to have that backwards if you think that the boys had ANY negotiating power when they were just coming off the XF.
A personal manager’s duties include advice and counsel in any or all areas of the artist’s entertainment career, such as:
· representing the artist in business negotiations;
· supervising professional engagements;
· coordinating publicity and promotion;
· soliciting recording, publishing, merchandising and endorsement contracts;
· directing and supervising the business aspects of the artist’s career;
· coordinating relations with record companies;
· song selection;
· assembling a professional support staff;
· being available to confer with artist;
· acting as a buffer between the artist and the rest of the world;
· shaping the artist’s image
The management contract should spell out the manager’s duties and should, (but often does not), specify that the manager will use reasonable or best efforts in performing those duties.
Given ALL of this very small search, where would you possibly believe management doesn’t have the ability to include clauses that control their image? Seriously? How incredibly naive and young are you?
In a society still teeming with homophobia, a management would be foolhardy NOT to take measures to ensure that the members of a boyband - meant to be seen as not only desirable but available to their fanbase - maintained that pre-determined image.
